Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)

What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to improve the shape and function of the nose. It can be performed for aesthetic concerns, as well as to address breathing problems. The nose; Since it is located in the very center of the face, rhinoplasty has a significant effect on a person’s facial expression and overall appearance.
The main goal in the modern rhinoplasty approach is not only to reduce or shape the nose; It is to obtain a nose structure that is compatible with the facial features, looks natural, and also ensures healthy breathing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)

Rhinoplasty can be preferred for both aesthetic and functional reasons.
Aesthetic reasons
• Prominent nasal hump
• Low or wide tip of the nose
• Disproportion of the nose size with the face
• Nasal asymmetries
Functional reasons
• Difficulty breathing due to nasal curvature
• Previous traumas
• Congenital structural problems

Rhinoplasty is a suitable surgery for people who are not satisfied with the appearance of their nose and/or have breathing problems. It is generally preferred in individuals aged 18 and over, as the development of the nose has been completed. In earlier ages, if there is a functional necessity, surgery can be planned with family approval.

The patient’s good general health, realistic expectations, and ability to adapt to the post-operative process directly affect success.

Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes an average of 2 to 3 hours.

Open rhinoplasty
It is performed with a small incision in the nasal septum area. It allows the surgeon to see the nasal structures more clearly and is especially preferred in complex cases where tip of the nose intervention is planned.
Closed rhinoplasty
All incisions are made from inside the nostrils. There is no visible scar from the outside and the healing process is generally a little faster. Which technique will be preferred is determined according to the patient’s nasal structure and needs.

In the first week after the surgery, there will be a splint (cast) and bandage on the nose. If silicone tampons are used, they are usually removed on the 3rd-5th days. Swelling, bruising, and mild pain may be seen in the first few days.

Things to consider during the healing process
• Heavy exercises should be avoided for the first 2 weeks
• The nose should be protected from blows
• The doctor’s care instructions should be followed
The final results on the shape of the nose usually become clear between 6 months and 1 year.

Today, the most targeted result in rhinoplasty surgeries is a natural appearance. When the nose is planned to be in harmony with the other structures of the face, results that are not noticed from the outside that the surgery has been performed can be obtained. The surgeon’s aesthetic understanding and experience are of great importance at this point.

Rhinoplasty is a permanent surgical procedure. However, revision surgery may be required in some patients due to the aging process, traumas, or rare complications.

Temporary breathing difficulties may be experienced in the early period after the surgery due to edema and crusting. In rhinoplasty performed with appropriate techniques, the breathing function is preserved or improved in the long term.

As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty also has some risks:
• Bleeding
• Shape dissatisfaction
• Breathing problems
• Infection
• Need for revision
These risks can be greatly reduced with an experienced surgeon and appropriate follow-up.

There is no external scar in the closed technique. In the open technique, the incision scar becomes indistinct over time.

Pain is usually mild and can be controlled with painkillers.

Most patients can return to their daily lives within 7-10 days.
