Common Ear Problems in Pregnancy

Feeling of Fullness and Pressure in the Ear
The increased blood volume and fluid retention in the body during pregnancy can affect the function of the Eustachian tube. This can lead to a feeling of fullness, blockage, and pressure in the ear. Complaints may increase, especially during air travel or sudden changes in altitude.
Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears)
Hormonal changes and differences in the circulatory system can cause tinnitus. Stress, insomnia, and fatigue can make this complaint more pronounced.
Middle Ear Infections
Susceptibility to infections may increase due to the different functioning of the immune system during pregnancy. Middle ear infections can manifest with ear pain, hearing loss, and a feeling of fullness.
Hearing Changes
As a result of pregnancy hormones affecting the fluid balance in the inner ear, some expectant mothers may experience temporary hearing loss or excessive sensitivity to sounds.
Dizziness and Balance Problems
The inner ear balance system can be affected by circulatory changes. This can lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, and loss of balance.
