Prominent Ear - Otoplasty

What is Prominent Ear?
Prominent ear is a condition in which the ears appear to protrude forward as a result of the angle between the auricle and the skull being greater than normal. Often the size of the auricle is normal; the problem is that the ear cartilage is not sufficiently curved or the ear-head angle has increased.

Normally, the distance of the auricle to the skull is approximately 1.5–2 cm, and the ear-head angle is a maximum of 20° in women and around 25° in men. In case of exceeding these values, prominent ear can be mentioned. Prominent ear can lead to aesthetic concerns and self-confidence issues in both children and adults.

Questions about Prominent Ear - Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct prominent ears and other ear shape deformities. It is commonly known as “prominent ear surgery”.
With otoplasty:
• The ears are brought closer to the head at a more natural angle
• The ear cartilage is reshaped
• The ears are given a natural appearance, in harmony with the face

Anyone who is aesthetically uncomfortable with the appearance of their ears can be a candidate for otoplasty.

Otoplasty in children
• Usually can be done after the age of 5-6
• Ear development is largely complete
• Provides an advantage in preventing psychological effects at school age
Otoplasty in adults
• There is no upper age limit
• Can be applied safely at any age

Otoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age and preference.
During the surgery:
• A small incision is made behind the ear
• The ear cartilage is shaped or repositioned
• If necessary, excess cartilage tissue is removed
• Cartilage is fixed with sutures
The procedure takes an average of 1-2 hours and most patients are discharged on the same day.

The post-operative process is generally comfortable.
• Mild pain, swelling, and sensitivity may occur in the first few days
• Pain is mostly controlled with simple painkillers
• Patients can usually return to their daily lives within 1 week

Bandage and protection process

• Ear band is used during the day and night for the first week
• It is recommended to use it only at night for the next 3-7 weeks

Yes. Otoplasty is a permanent procedure. The ear cartilage adapts to its new shape and the results are maintained for many years. Small correction procedures may be rarely required.

Since the surgical incision is behind the ear, no scar is noticeable from the outside. Scars fade over time and become almost invisible.

Otoplasty is a safe surgery. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are some risks:
• Infection
• Bleeding
• Asymmetry
• Suture opening
• Rarely, changes in sensation
Performing it by an experienced ear, nose and throat specialist and following post-operative recommendations minimize these risks.

No. Prominent ear is a structural condition and does not correct itself permanently without surgery.

The risk of reopening is quite low in otoplasty performed with the correct technique.

No. Post-operative pain is usually mild.
