Adenoid and Tonsil Diseases (Adenoid and Tonsil Problems)

What are Adenoids and Tonsils?
Adenoids and tonsils are lymphoid tissues within the Waldeyer lymphatic ring (defense system), which is an important part of the immune system. These structures contribute to the formation of the immune response by recognizing microorganisms that enter the body, especially during childhood.
The adenoid is located behind the nose, and the tonsils are located on either side of the throat. The size and functions of these tissues may vary with age.

FAQs About Adenoid Diseases

These structures capture microorganisms that enter the body through the respiratory and digestive tracts, stimulating the immune system. Thanks to the crypts (indentations) called crypts on them, the surface area
increases and it becomes easier to hold the microbes.
The adenoids are usually around the age of 6, and the tonsils reach their most active and largest size during adolescence. In the following years, most people tend to shrink.

In some children and adults, adenoids or tonsils can grow larger than normal and cause problems.
The most common causes are
• Recurrent upper respiratory infections
• Genetic predisposition
• Allergic diseases
• Environmental factors
• Abnormal immune responses
As a result of this growth, the airways may narrow and various health problems may arise.

• Nasal congestion and mouth breathing
• Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea
• Frequent recurrent tonsillitis
• Otitis media and fluid accumulation in the ear
• Chronic sinusitis
• Speech and swallowing problems
In What Cases Does Adenoid Cause Problems?

Adenoid enlargement, especially in children, can disrupt nasal breathing, causing mouth breathing. Long-term mouth breathing; It can lead to deterioration in facial development, decrease in sleep quality and learning problems.

• Chronic adenoiditis
• Fluid accumulation in the middle ear and hearing loss
• Obstructive sleep apnea
• Severe snoring
• Speech and swallowing disorders
• Frequent recurrence of sinusitis attacks

Tonsils can cause serious complaints in both children and adults when they have frequent infections or are excessively enlarged.

• Frequently recurring tonsillitis per year
• Sleep apnea due to tonsil enlargement
• Chronic sore throat
• Tonsil stone formation
• Asymmetrical tonsil enlargement and suspicion of tumor

Adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy are usually surgical procedures performed under general anesthesia. The surgery time is short, and most patients are discharged on the same day or the next day. Thanks to modern surgical techniques, the risk of bleeding is low and the recovery process is more comfortable.

• Sore throat and difficulty swallowing may occur in the first few days
• Children usually return to their normal activities within 7–10 days
• Paying attention to nutrition and fluid intake speeds up recovery

Research shows that there may be temporary changes in the immune system after surgery, but immune functions return to normal in the long run. These surgeries do not lead to a significant loss of immunity.
