Fluid Accumulation in the Middle Ear in Children (Serous Otitis Media)
What is Serous Otitis Media?
Serous otitis media is a disease characterized by fluid accumulation in the middle ear without infection. It is generally known as “fluid in the ear” among the public. This condition mostly occurs as a result of Eustachian tube dysfunction and is especially common in childhood
The middle ear is normally a space filled with air. The Eustachian tube provides ventilation and fluid drainage of the middle ear. In case this tube does not work sufficiently, fluid accumulates in the middle ear and hearing functions are negatively affected
