Sinonasal Papillomas

What is Sinonasal Papilloma?

Sinonasal papillomas; originating from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, are benign but aggressive tumoral formations that can show growth and recurrence. Although they are rare, especially inverted papilloma is of great clinical importance because it can spread to surrounding tissues and also carries a certain risk of transformation into cancer.

These tumors usually show unilateral localization and can grow unnoticed for a long time.

Things You Wonder About Sinonasal Papillomas

1. Inverted Papilloma

•The most common and most aggressive type of papilloma

•Can spread from the nasal cavity to the sinuses

The type with the highest risk of recurrence and malignant transformation (5–15%)

2. Exophytic (Squamous) Papilloma

•Generally located in the front of the nose

•Shows more limited spread

•Lower risk of transformation into cancer

3. Cylindrical Cell Papilloma

•Rare

•Can progress to deeper tissues

•High follow-up requirement

Although the exact cause is not fully known, the following factors are thought to play a role:

•Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

•Chronic nasal and sinus infections

•Smoking

•Environmental and occupational irritants

•Long-term mucosal inflammation

These factors can lead to cellular changes in the nasal mucosa, triggering the development of papillomas.
