Revision Rhinoplasty

What is Revision Rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty refers to the second or subsequent nose surgeries performed for patients who have undergone previous rhinoplasty surgery but have not achieved the desired aesthetic or functional results. These surgeries can be performed not only to correct the shape of the nose but also to address breathing problems. Revision rhinoplasty is technically more complex and requires experience compared to the initial rhinoplasty. This is because the nasal anatomy has been surgically altered before and the tissues have undergone some structural changes during the healing process

Frequently Asked Questions About Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty may be needed for various reasons. The most common reasons are:
• Dissatisfaction with the aesthetic appearance of the nose
• Drooping or asymmetry of the nasal tip
• Failure of the nasal bridge to straighten sufficiently or recurrence
• Shape defects in the nostrils
• Continued or increased breathing difficulty
• Structural problems that develop after surgery

It is very important that the nasal tissues have completely healed before planning revision rhinoplasty. Therefore, it is generally recommended to wait at least 9-12 months. This period is necessary for the edema in the nose to completely disappear and for the tissues to take their final shape.
In rare cases, earlier intervention may be required in the presence of very prominent structural problems or serious respiratory problems. However, this decision must be made after a detailed examination.

Revision rhinoplasty is considered more difficult than the first rhinoplasty. The degree of difficulty of the surgery increases as the number of revisions increases.
The main reasons for this are:
• Scar tissue formation due to previous surgeries
• Weakening of cartilage and bone support structures
• Decreased elasticity of the nasal skin
• Disruption of the natural order of anatomical structures
For this reason, revision rhinoplasty should be planned by an ear, nose and throat specialist who is experienced in this field.

In revision rhinoplasty, cartilage tissue is often needed to re-support the nasal structure.
Regions from which cartilage can be taken
• Nasal septum (nasal partition): First choice in suitable cases
• Ear cartilage: A frequently used and safe source
• Rib cartilage: Preferred when more extensive support is required
The choice of cartilage is determined according to the patient’s nasal structure and the scope of the correction to be made.

The healing process is similar to the first rhinoplasty, but may take a little longer in some patients.
• Swelling and bruising may be seen in the first days
• It may take months for the edema to completely pass
• Final results in nasal shape usually become clear within 12–18 months
Being patient and following the doctor’s recommendations are very important for the healthy progress of the healing process.

With the right surgical techniques and realistic expectations, it is possible to achieve natural and face-compatible results in revision rhinoplasty. However, it should be remembered that there may be some anatomical limitations due to the nose tissue having undergone surgery before.

As with any surgical procedure, revision rhinoplasty also has some risks:
• Wound healing problems
• Bleeding
• Infection
• Shape dissatisfaction
• Respiratory problems
• Need for additional revision
Choosing an experienced surgeon and following post-operative care instructions significantly reduces these risks.

Revision rhinoplasty provides significant improvement in most patients. However, each patient’s nasal structure and healing capacity are different. Therefore, it is of great importance to have realistic expectations before the surgery.
